Also here: Mukami.
Obvious exits: south, northwest
[HP=52]:bs muka
*Combat Engaged*
You surprise impale Mukami for 155 damage!
Mukami surprise hacks you for 179 damage!
You drop to the ground!
*Combat Off*

something just seems wrong about 2 people being able to backstab eachother on the same round.

Agreed.

Hmm... so what should the rule be?

DC already scolded me for wanting to make it so if someone moves to attack you, you automatically lose the ability to backstab.  The only other option I see to prevent the above from happening is only allowing the first person to attempt a backstab and the other players can only do a normal round of combat.

Any other ideas?

I would just leave it as is right now. The reason I would just leave it in like this is because its a surprise attack and if both attempt it and land the strike they would both be surprised. So I'd say this is a much different problem than the backstab when engaged in combat scenario.

If I were to really do anything to this what I might suggest is giving a damage penalty to the person landing the second backstab since the force of the first blow would make it harder to push their attack through to do their max damage.

when trying to engage a backstab do a check. If someone has engaged combat on you then you can only attack/cast.

Thinking about this again I think mmud just has the second bs default to normal combat.

Afaik, you can't engauge a bs on someone that has engauged on you, but if you enguage first then your bs goes off.  But being engauged in combat doesn't break stealth.
