I know this is something that DC really wants to see. Something related that I would really like to see that is related is sieges on castles and fortifications in relations to large-scale quests that take groups of parties to complete.

What I was thinking for this is to have devices like siege towers, catapults, ballistics, and similar large weaponry that would have a mechanical hp total that would need to be pushed or pulled by a party into position and then used. The idea that they have mechanical hp so that creatures and npcs could attack them to render them useless before reaching their destinations so players would have to take turns defending it while other members of the party attacked. Depending on the size of the device, it would require different sizes of parties to move.

Now once a device was in place it would use a non-magic spell on the room I briefly went over this in the thread on dynamic room descriptions. Basically, what it would do is trigger by use of an item being present or spell being activated in the room trigger the room to change some of its properties.

Now an item like a siege tower when in the correct room would trigger the room to have an additional temporary up exit that would allow the breech of a wall. A battering ram might be able to take down a castle gate. And other similar devices could perform other tasks.

Similarly a fortification could be defended with these devices so that an arrow slit in a castle wall might have say 240 mechanical hp and can only be hit with the use of spells, ranged weapons, and or with some siege weapons.

I presume that the spell wouldn't be instant?
Or that the spell would 'damage' the gates/wall, for example, the gate has 200hp. Battering ram does 25 (?) damage/round. Ram is, as you mentioned, destroyable.

Just curious how it'll work, as insta breach doesn't seem very fair :p especially seeing as how we don't have room to room combat.

It really depends on how it is coded.

I look at it like this.

In the case of the siege tower, it would be a multi-round spell to get the tower in the correct and final position however, it could be stopped before its activation by destroying the tower.

With the gate it might have to work different such as the door is un-damageable when the battering ram is not in the room and then when it is the game switches some room properties around having a permanent item blocking the exit. This item would be a gate with X amount of mechanical hp that you would then need to whack at the gate with the ram.

Sounds good to me.

Don't forget the boiling oil being dropped from above ;)

I love the idea of sieges. Perhaps it would be cool to have areas sectioned off where 2 parties can enter the area and one be assigned in the castle, the other outside. The battle ensues. Whoever's left, wins. sort of like planned PvP with no real consequences...like the arena.

oooo maybe, like the arena, when you die, you spaw somewhere deeper in the castle (or down the path leading to the castle if you're outside), and you run back and keep fighting. no DPs, just constant carnage. The winner is decided one of two ways:

1) The attacking team reaches an area and destroys an item or something; victory for attackers
or
2) A timer runs out before condition 1 is met; victory for defenders

would be the best mud arena EVER.

I love it.  At least in 'these' terms I can think of several ways to do this in both coding terms and content terms.

If you need/want anything from me about this, let me know. I wouldn't mind working on it a bit.

I thought it might be a good one...

I thought of it being mostly for massive quest use but I think it would be cool if maybe you could slip gangs into this some how and make those gang house raids a little more interesting too.

I think my favorite part is maybe the defense and pulling of the objects around the realm..

I'll have to carefully read through the posts and cover what I like and don't like....But not at um 6 in the morning.  The jager bottle is empty now.

Grin and to think I drink trying to go to sleep..

TCA

Well at one point in time I had sworn off the drinking while mudding.  Because I was more about being highly effecient while atks.  I had way over analyzed mud, and I took it a little too seriously.  I had this notion that I'd have to work to be the best on any particular board.  As it became clear that I didn't really need to do jack to be the best my theories on 'how/to' sorta fell apart.

I used to think it was best to never speak with anyone that couldn't keep up/offer me something i needed.  Never let anyone see my characters gear, or know what monsters I've killed.  Never let anyone see me gain exp from quest bonuses by timing my questing to be while others were afk.  Vary your scripting area every few hours.  God i was a freak.

Now I realize that I can do quite well by talking big and slaughtering my competition in pvp.  And I'm more likely to do that while slobbering drunk.

I don't think I was ever that competative with my mmuding I think at worst I had a bit of a pack rat mentality to the game hording, raiding, and trading was what I did best. Most people didn't want to mess with me do to the freebees that I would give out from time to time. So it was normally a free ride into the top 20 on most established boards.

TCA

For me 2nd place was only an option if I was playing in a group and only then if I was playing a priest.

I normally went with a missionary or a gypsy.

Umm yeah..

I had a missy..and I was in first place until I hit like mid 60's then a paladin caught up with me...

I was very upset.

Of course he caught up after i had already quit playing on the bbs.

grin, I think more bbs have quit on me then the other way around. :)
