Now this is what I'm talking about.  I check these forums just for the chance to see hate bitch.  Keep him stirred up fellas.

Are you going to monitor it and enforce it?

Sorry, to clarify... what I meant is does the GreaterMUD server have the ability to limit the amount of simultaneous connections allowed from an IP address.

This way you CAN'T connect more than a certain amount of times from one IP.

No.  At present all enforcement is done by the ops.

Wait.
You're really going to go with unlimited dupes for the pvp realm?
I realize that policing dupes isn't the funnest thing in the world, but this is what you have MudOps FOR. Part of their job is keeping the realm clear of nonsense. Isn't it? Am I high?

Robdawg has been running a mud for approximately 67 years, and he hasn't had that many issues with dupes. Let's see what he has to say about dupes:

I know how much of a pain it is to keep track of dupes but people are going to get out of control and have 10 characters each.

I completely agree. Greatermud is going to have 400 warriors running around. THRAG, bless his black heart, will be dropping the golden belt to the first group of 20 level five horc warriors that manage to waddle into his room... I'd estimate at around 15 minutes after launch.

I'm afraid that Greatermud pvp will simply become a dupewar. Whoever has the most characters "wins". How is that even remotely fun?

I do understand why you want no restrictions on dupes. You don't want the hassle. Unfortunately, hassle is a part of majormud/greatermud, and if you don't want to deal with it you should perhaps have someone who can. I hate to repeat myself, but isn't that what MudOps are here for?

I honestly don't think that many mudders dupe in the first place. There are a few people who dupe every push, and everyone is fairly aware of it. A few dupes aren't going to ruin anything anyhow. We need SOMETHING to bitch about, right? But 12987198272198719179218712 (exact number) dupes WILL make Greatermud pants-on-head stupid. Announcing "unlimited dupes" will turn it into that. I would just stick with "no dupes" and rely on players not being dickheads.

Every mudder here has been playing Mud since 1995 (sadly) and we all want Greatermud to succeed. I think having enough faith in the playerbase will go much farther than just throwing your hands up and allowing unlimited dupes.

You lost me here.  There are just to many ways to skirt the rules.  I personally have zero problem being the board jerk and taking all the flak for "suspected dupes" being banned but my involvement in this new push is going to be minimum unless development resumes soon.

I understand that and that's fine, but couldn't the two MudOps that have been brought on take the "flak" instead? Jigga is more than capable of being just as big of a bored jerk as you, I can sense it in his soul.

I would prefer no dupe as well, lets see how sensible people are.

The problem I see for picking out dupes is that in order for me to suspect dupes, I'd have to be very involved in the game, and since I'm a MudOp, I won't be involved in PVP on the PVP Realm for obvious reasons.

And really, there's just no way to prove it other than if people have multiple connections from the same IP.

I think the best way to do it is to see if Vitoc can implement some sort of setting that would only allow a certain amount of connections per IP address. That would at least force people to use other IP's. Then comes the arguments over who is a dupe, who is someone's friend that is AFK all the time, who is using their computer at work for another account, etc.

It's a very tough thing to keep track of. We've tried it one way the last push, so let's try something different this time. If things become a disaster, we'll do it differently next time. The good thing is, after a year or so, the game gets stale and you reset anyways giving you a clean slate to try something else. Plus more characters in the Realm means that there are more users to occupy limiteds and get killed for them. Better than them being stashed away someplace.

And really, after 1, maybe 2 dupes, they really aren't that much of an advantage. It's almost annoying to have to control so many.

Exactly, which is why unlim dupes is the best rule. If you limit the number of dupes, everyone will break the rule to try and get an edge. If you just say unlimited dupes the natural balance of the game will take over. There are very few instances where having more than 2 characters will do you any good.

I do expect to see Luci with 58+ missionaries though.

I definitely disagree with "Having more characters won't be an advantage anyways!"  With the amount of automation that MegaMUD provides, there is plenty advantage.  Even in PVP.  6 "people" even set up through Mega, if properly done, can kill a group of 2 a lot easier than another group of two.

On that note -  "Duping" is near impossible to detect when people aren't dumb enough to use the same IP.  Rarely would they get caught, unless they accidentally log in to the IP.  Or if you notice their IP seems to change a lot.

It's even worse on websites, where you have to track every IP and search to see if it's a proxy etc.   And since there are also legitimate uses of proxies, it gets really annoying and nearly impossible to police.

I don't forsee there being a lot of people running 5+ characters though, but I could be wrong.   Everyone always finds the worst case scenario and says it will definitely happen.

Considering it's highly unlikely (read: won't be) that the party issue will be fixed by tomorrow I don't think dupes are going to be a huge issue anyhow.  It's no advantage at all if you can't auto party them up.

You're all a bunch of idiots sitting here assuming "they really aren't that much of a advantage"...Hell. if it wasn't for dupes the Oz crew probably wouldn't have been killed...imo anyhow.  But yea.  Boss killing is the best way to make exp, not scripting.  And that's what dupes allows a person to do.  Kill bosses faster, get items faster.  And not everybody wants to play the game like the next geek just to get ahead in a game just to have a advantage.

Hell...You're probably saying "unlimited dupes" just to try and make greatermud look more popular to keep the lines full more often.  I'd rather see how much of a fail greatermud is just from the bullshit that happened this past push.

Your English isn't very good.

I was looking forward to this push been afk a lot since I moved but with unlimited dupes I think I'll skip this push and enjoy my new motorcycle this summer

Then all you need to do is ask either TwoGirlz, Jigga, or myself how many unique users are online on the pvp realm.
