We had a group of 5 going to the Dao to complete the quest for one of us.  The person needing the quest died and re-entered the game in the halls.  As soon as the last mob in the room died, all the rest of us were ejected from the room and ported to the desert.

Nobody entered any command to leave the Elemental Plane.  How did we end up here and unable to collect the dropped gear?

Because that's how the game is designed (minus the can't get your gear part).  Sadly you killed all the monsters in the room so I can't get your gear either now.  So now he will have to wait for everything to regen and go again and search/pickup his gear before everything dies.

yeah that happened to us...kill dao and leave stones there until ya get all the gear

In majormud the gear gets teleported out of the room to the same room you get ported to, also there is a much greater delay from when the room is cleared and you get ported out.

MUCH greater delay is a bit of an understatement.  We weren't in there more than 3 seconds after the last kill.  Had the Dao Lord dropped something, we wouldn't have had enough time to think before grabbing it.
