I don't know if you planned on having this skill.  And I'm sure you guys found a better way to do with.  But this is my NMR workaround

Item:
broadsword and shortsword
has same damage as a broadsword
weight 165
speed 1500
Str Reg: 80

2handed

Ablillities
114 %spell 30
43 Cast spell 9098

spells 9098
Shortsword
damage 2-9

so 30% of the time you hit with the shortsword

I made a whole buch of these type of weapons, but i'm sure there is a better way.

We'll deal with this in a coding aspect.

Do you mean to say that dual-wielding is something that will be implemented?

Yeah, not for every class though.  It will likely be restricted to certain classes and/or be a quest learned ability.

Duel weapons? Dueling pistols?

"I challenge you to a duel! Pistols at dawn!"

.....all sarcasm aside, dual wielding would be pretty cool, and adding dueling pistols in the game, one-time shot, 20-1000 damage, very low accuracy, PVP only...that would be awesome.

Duel Weapons? Aye. Great idea!

This has already been done.
Southerncross did this a long time ago.

Which has nothing to do with adding this feature into GreaterMUD.

Hi, everyone...
I often do not post in Greatermud's affairs because it is not my concern.

To save some time with this, I will explain why the above posted.

I have done many edits, code and .DLL changes to my mud, as well as WG.
I spent several years reverse engineering MMUD.

What this is about is integrity of Edits.

There are a couple things GMUD did way after the fact than when I did it and cracked the code.
An example of this is the 10-spell limitation. It was a matter of time before others will have figured it out. I did not say anything about it when brought up. I believe that it was even posted how to do it, after I did it almost 2 years ago.

However, there are several features in which I added, cracked, made switches for etc. Those are meant to be exclusive to my board. The problem is that I keep things semi-private only posting on MMB on how to do simple stuff that will let others enhance their BBS or boards.

The thing my players get upset about is when they start seeing things which are exclusive to my BBS and mud and see those things popping up on other boards. This dual wield idea is one of them. I figured it out almost a year ago and implemented it a few months ago, working out all the bugs before release. There are dozens of other exclusive features that are exclusive, which everyone is in fear of seeing other boards attempt to imitate or use.

The issue here is not that you guys want to attempt what has already been done before. It is about respect and recognition. If you want to use a competitors edits, ask them first just do not assume that it is original and that it is ok to do. Ask the person who has done it first and give that person the recognition for doing so.

This is the same if I stole the nice GUI the Greatermud project has worked on (great works guys not saying that to be sarcastic, it is really nice) and use it as my own saying F the GMUD team. Why should I not use or what does this have to do to use on HR MUD?

The thing here is integrity and being professional. If you want to use or do something, simply ask the original creator whose intent was to make that an exclusive on their board, rather than assume it is ok to take cause it has nothing to do with putting in on your board. It has everything to do it.

Actions like this are the same as if I stole the GMUD GUI, and said hey, I liked it I took it.  I have much more integrity and professionalism than to ever steal anyone?s work or ideas. If I wanted to use someone?s ideas or edits, I would ask first.  You never see me asking to use anyone?s material. I created and continue to make and build highly original edits. I do post on MMB on how to do the real easy and simple stuff.
There is just me working on the Code, and complicated edits within my project and board. There are several people working on the GMUD project. While I do have a lot of respect for the GMUD project and monitor afar what is happening. I expect the same respect.  While GMUD made the GUI, my focus was on changing and reverse engineering the MMUD code. I have had great success in doing that and have created and almost new game entirely and a completely different playing aspect to it. My edits and rework of code has been done as a solo project, figuring out A=B in years worth of work.  Seeing a person coming along and saying "hey look what we can do" when it has already been done is the equivalent to theft and other aspects in the editing community.

Once again, I stay out of GMUDS affairs and respect from a distance, never have I ever thought about copying or imitating anything they have done. I expect the same respect. When you step on someone?s toes, they get upset. If the GMud project wants to use something that has already been done and implemented on someone else?s board, just simply ask can we use this idea on out board. Do not be sneaky and backhanded about it.  If the GMUD wants a list of edits and recoding that has been done, I will send them a list. However, I will not tell anyone how I did it, out of the belief that each board should have its own original content. Do not use anyone?s content but your own. That is why I highly look down on boards that use MUDREVS or MORBID BBS DATS, there is nothing original about you using someone else?s work.  If you do, ask first.

Hope that clarifies things before it goes into any disconcerted actions by our users.
Thanks

Talking about it like its a new idea or something new they came up with.
When it's not.
And of corse it has everything to do with gmud or mmud.
Like if i took every idea off this forum and put it on my mmud bord.
That would be ok then right?

If you look at the date of the original post, it is from almost 3 years ago, and Aukey had already implemented it in some fashion at that time.  I think your arguement is starting to fall apart.

Show me which board, put it up let me see it in action and working. and i will give him all the respect due for it.

I will be happy to log onto that board from 3 years ago and check it out.

I got a large player base just like you guys do between 40 to 60+ players per day. They would love to check out others work, as well as I do. If in fact, he did do it, I will give him the switch it is hidden behind in the .DLL code to make it work.

I have not, to my knowledge, ever played on his board.  Aukey posted his version of how he did it.  It was through a different method that you use, but he did it none the less so he says.  And that's sort of beside the point.  The idea of dual weapons has been around for some time, long before you did your edit to include it.

Some do it with spells on items, some do it by patching the dll.  We will find our own method of putting it into play if we decide to go that route.

We don't use the MajorMUD DLL's.  We don't use their ancient and buggy code base.  It is possible that we come up with something similar to what you have, it is equally possible we come up with something completely different.  We're not remotely ready to dive off into that concept yet and won't be until sometime after V1.0 is complete and out the door most likely.

You also must remember that we have full control and access to all the source code in our project so we are not constrained by limitations put in place by other programmers, i.e. Metro/Wcc.  That gives us advantages that patching Metro's DLL will never provide.

Are you seriously claiming ownership of a concept that is almost as old as the game itsself?  A concept that someone else put in the game and you found the switch for?

I have no doubt that you have made a large investment in time and effort on your realm.  I have followed your progress on MMB as you have posted the updates to your realm there.  I'm sure your users are very happy with what you have done.

We also have a large investment in this project.  There is a large list of people over the years who have made significant contributions to this project both with their time and their talents.  Ideas come from a wide range of sources.  Again, I will point out that the initial post on this subject is 3 years old, and by your own admission you implemented your version of this only recently.  We did not take your idea.

I understand what you are saying, but you got to remember, I also redid the WG code and was given the WG source code and updated it. I also reversed the .dll and almost completely redid it.  I chose to remain old school. I began my project about 6 years ago. That is after working and building circle and smaug mode code with Jeremy Elfson and Patrick Dughi for ten years before I began this project. I have had high success at bringing circle mud code and slowly adopting it to what I am doing.

Today, I managed to get player owned housing and player owned pets working and implemented. By next week I will have player career and exclusive class morphing working. (Already began working on it).

If I was to see that someone else worked or implemented a similar thing, I would at least say, hey thank you for the ideas and give that respect.

Look Gardner, It is no secret that I use to work and help Metro in the end days. It is also no secret that I and Vitoc were both bidding to buy MMUD. That part has been known for awhile, both me and Vitoc were shot down in the end. I still keep in touch with Shannon at times. In fact this is Shannon?s reply to me about the project.

Hello Dave, I just wanted to let you know that we are not doing any more development on Majormud at this time.  My time has been allocated to other projects, and I am not expecting to be put back on Majormud development any time soon if at all.  While I can't outright authorize 3rd party editing, it's not something we are focused on hunting down at this time. If people were editing, we would ask them to remove the edits if we did resume development and released more content.

Both mine and GMUDS project is known to be similar in ways. I was working on both a new Graphic Interface years ago and a new editor (adopted from cbreak,  I helped write for circle mud) Both Gmud and RH mud has been in development around the same time. One does a great new school-look, the other wants a more edited mud with updated and circle mud code aspects. When one feels that the other might be stepping on its toes, it gets noticed. While I do agree there may be similar things, we are both after all, still majormud.  That saying you can take a pile of crap, wrap it In gold, but it is still a pile of crap. That is what we are both working from in a coding aspect. However, we can make it art, the core is still the same.
It is obvious that we all care about this game a lot. However, I do believe in integrity of edits.
You guys have done a great job on the direction you have gone in, but don?t assume that everyone will evolve around you at the same time.  We are two different schools and two new directions MMUD is going in. If we see something the other likes or would like to incorporate, give that bit of recognition that is due.  Keep up the good work, and I will keep updating the code that runs the mud. I have done everything I have done reverse engineering the code and adding on to it.

I'm not going to get into a back and forth argument with anyone.

The ideas we are implementing aren't "exclusive" at all.  They're very common ideas that are found throughout multiple MUDs and RPGs.  Pets, dual-wield, etc. aren't new or original ideas.  We didn't have, nor did we need MajorMUD's source code to create what we have.  What we have is a completely new MUD written in a completely new language.  We didn't borrow source, we didn't hex-edit DLLs, and we didn't hack anything.  We have all the original source to TGS and GMUD sitting on my HD this very second and every single line of code was written entirely by myself and Soul, and perhaps more importantly we own the rights to it.

I have respect for what can be done with content changes and hex edits, but nothing beats having unfettered access to view and modify the source as we see fit.  You can do things that simply aren't possible with content edits.

SouthernCross, I wish you luck with your project, but understand we are completely independent projects with almost nothing in common.  Ours is a total rewrite in a new language on a new telnet server with an entirely new engine and absolutely no access to the source of MMUD.  We haven't taken anything "exclusive" from anybody.  Our forums have been around for several years now and we have hundreds of ideas that have been posted in our ideas section.  Similarly, if we implement something that you think is cool and you want to implemented, we're not asking for credit.
